Jewels, precious stones or gems, occasionally called precious stones, are pieces of mineral that are often utilized for making jewellery or other ornaments after cutting and polishing. The majority of the gems are considered hard materials, but some soft minerals are also used as jewelry due to their luster. There are countless thousands of known minerals existing in nature, but only about a hundred are thought of as true gem or jewel minerals. There are only about twelve or so gems that are basically valuable enough to be considered important precious stones in the world market. A mineral is regarded as a valuable gemstone if it is beautiful, hard and durable. The beauty of a gem is measured in terms of its lucidity, brilliance and colour. The market valuation of the gemstone depends on its scarceness, pureness, clearness, beauty, cut and size of the stone.

Precious stones can exist in different colors depending upon the atomic structure of the stone. While the natural marvel of the gem can be enhanced by cutting and polishing in the right way. There are several types and treatments to heighten the color and lucidity of a stone. The heating process is the most common way used to heighten the clearness and colour of stones. There are some treatments that are generally used where the consequential stone is stable. While there are other treatments that aren't typically accepted as the ensuing colours are often unsound and may, regrettably, revert to its original color after a little time.

Precious stones are traditionally classified in every period of time from the Ancient Greeks to the modern day and in each culture of life. In the modern period, gemstones are divided into precious and semi-precious stones. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds are thought to be dear stones and every other stone are assumed semi-precious. In some classifications, stones are characterized regarding their color, transparency, toughness and translucency. Gemstones are also split into different groups, species and varieties. For instance, ruby is the red range of species corundum while any other colour of corundum is considered sapphire. A person who identifies technical gemstone traits (chemical composition, crystal system, optical properties, habit, healing ability, and so on.), is referred to as a gemologist.

Valuable stones are found on the surface of the earth, as well as, in the ocean. The nine most important gemstones found between land and sea are rubies, pearls, red corals, green emeralds, yellow sapphires, diamonds, blue sapphires, hessonites and cat's eyes.

Synthetic gems that are made in laboratories are called synthesised or synthetic gems. Synthesised diamonds are usually manufactured in big quantities as commercial abrasives and can be found in multiple carats. Synthesised corundum including ruby and sapphire are extremely common, but only cost a little part of the natural stone. But whether the stone is natural or created in a lab, they usually have the same characteristics.
