Protecting your trailer against theft

Whether you have a trailer for business or recreation, you'll understand just how valuable they are and why that means you need to make sure they are sufficiently protected against theft. Certain measures may even drive down insurance costs. But if you can't hire a 24/7 security guard, what steps can you take to prevent theft?

Hitchlocks have to be first on anyone's list when it comes to preventing trailer theft. A criminal will need specialist tools to break through these locks meaning that unless they are given plenty of time by themselves your trailer will be safe.

But what if a well-organised criminal knows the type of lock you use and knows that a grinder will cut through it? In these cases the only hope you have is stopping the thief from having the opportunity to use his equipment. An alarm is one way to alert you to criminal activity and should hopefully make any criminal decide to run rather than risk being caught.

Depending on the value of your trailer you might want to consider fitting a GPS tracker somewhere inconspicuous so that in the event that it is stolen you will be much more likely to trace it. Obviously you'll want this to be a last resort, but if you're unable to completely eliminate the risk of trailer theft you may want to take this extra precaution.

To make sure that GPS tracking really is a last resort, you can also prevent trailer theft by leaving your trailer somewhere secure whenever possible. If it isn't possible, leave your trailer somewhere visible - all but the stupidest of thieves hate doing their work with an audience to contend with.
