GPS Land Surveyors

The ability to track the whereabouts of a person, vehicle or object has been around since 1973 when the first ideas of GPS were discussed. The idea of the GPS project was to establish a system that did not suffer the problems associated with traditional navigation systems of the day.

The basis of the world's current GPS system relied on a receiver being able to make contact with at least four satellites at any one time and by 1994 the US Department of Defence had established 24 satellites in orbit to achieve this aim. The Russian Military had its own "Global Navigation Satellite System", which became available to civilians in 2007, and there is also the European "Galileo Positioning System" and the Chinese "Compass Navigation System."

There are GPS tracking devices that exist for keeping tabs on kids, elderly relatives and vehicles. The use of a mobile phone is cheap, useful and unobtrusive and will allow you to know the whereabouts of the phone - thus giving you peace of mind about the position of its owner. This obviously needs the consent of the person carrying the phone, as legally you cannot just covertly bug your relatives, workmates and neighbours.

The military asserted that it was important for them to be able to track their submarines, aircraft and intercontinental ballistic missiles in the event of war. An accurate GPS tracking system meant that submarines could pinpoint their exact position should they need to launch their missiles.

The programs allow you to quickly discover the phone's location but they can also allow you to remotely lock the phone making it useless to a thief. You are able to send out alerts to the mobile that indicate that it has been stolen.

Of course doing this wouldn't be sufficient for precise surveying, and so in fact a GPS device will send a message to lots of different satellites at once and will then be able to calculate the relative distance from all these points. Then, using this information it can 'triangulate' its precise location.

These systems make it less desirable for thieves to take your phone but even more likely that you are able to get it back. Certain programs let you log on to their website and you can see exactly where your phone is currently located using a mapping service. Many of these mobile tracking apps work equally as well with your iPhone, smart phones, Blackberry or android systems so they can keep an eye on all your mobile devices.
